Before setting sail for New Zealand, The Education Abroad Network (TEAN) likes to take their students on a little 4-day getaway to Fiji. Its 4 days of no cell-phone service, no wifi, no itinerary, relaxation. and it was spectacular. We took a 4 and a half hour ferry from the main Island to the Island of Naviti. We passed by natives welcoming guests from rocks, and large lavishing Island resorts.
When we landed at our resort, we had too many people, so most of us had to wait on a raft by the ferry. Our resort was very rustic, and based on using only the essentials.
The natives were amazingly kind and loved playing volleyball with us.
Teaching us how to open up coconuts.
and showing us how to cook traditional Fijian food, (which is buried in the sand and then smoked underground for a few hours.)
We went on snorkeling and fishing trips
went swimming in the ocean
and enjoyed a 6am morning hike to see the sunrise
and an hour hike to the local village.
We met some locals, and went to the children school.
They loved taking pictures!
Fiji was a paradise
but eventually we had to leave
It was 4 days of ice breakers, relaxation, and fun. Meeting 40 other people who are also studying abroad in New Zealand was partly intimidating, but made the experience so much more enjoyable. I was grateful for this relaxed part of paradise that we were able to come together and get to know each other without the stress of a new city.
